I think that wet type air filters are necessary for all tractors. Dry air filter may be good for other types of vehicles but for tractors they are worthless. Both of my medium sized tractors Massey Ferguson MF240 and Belarus MTZ50 filter air by passin it through oil. I think asking $50 for air filter for New Holland TC21d is plain robbery.Nuclear_Weapon7Nuclear_Weapon7@Hotmail.comHyderabad,Sindh,PAKISTAN.

1) The wet type air filters supply cleaner air to the engine thus prolonging its life.2) Even used oil can be put in these filters thus making it very economcial. 3) In windy and dusty condition dry type fitlers clog up, choking the engine.Nuclear_Weapon7.Hyderabad. ....

I must assume you are talking about "oil bath" air filters. These were quite common in the "old" days (still used on Volkswagen Beetles in the 60s) but lost favor to paper elements. The oil bath has its place in areas (like maybe Pakistan) where parts are tough to come by. All you need is some oil and you're in business. In the end the exotic paper elements that come on modern diesels are the best thing going for maximum filtration. You just have to find them when you need them. If the oil bath was such a neat deal you'd see them on expensive engines......you don't. ....

My one and only experience with an Oil type air filter was on an old AC tri-cycle front end tractor. It might have worked well, but it surely wasn't as convenient as a paper element, and seemed to require more frequent changes to keep the element working properly. I'm sure the real reasons for it's death has something to do with an environmental reason. ....

What you do see on a lot of expensive engines is a prefilter that works by centrifuging the air to get the particles out. The fine dust is then collected in a jar or similar device which gets dumped out. Beats me why this is not more common with all intake systems. Its surprising how much dirt gets trapped this way.
